Assignment 2- Bug List
Bug list
1. The third floor in my house (where my room is) does not get as cold as the lower floors in my house where my roommates rooms are. If I turn the air down they complain they are too cold, but I sweat in my sleep every night.
· WHY: This is probably because the air doesn’t distribute evenly between floors and also comes out on the first and second floors before it comes out on the third floor.
2. My scooter doesn’t quick start on certain days and I have to hold up traffic to get off and kick start it.
· WHY: If I don’t ride it often the idle on my scooter starts to malfunction. In addition, cold weather can prevent the quick start from working.
3. I can’t scrub the inside of my swell water bottle.
· WHY: The swell bottle has a very long narrow neck making it impossible to use ones hand a normal size sponge to clean the inside.
4. The pine needles from the street parking on 20th street fall on my car and get stuck in my cars drainage system.
· WHY: During fall especially, the pine needles fall due to the excessive rain we have here in Gainesville. Because the pine needles are so thin when they get into the hood of my car they block my car’s drainage system.
5. It can take up to 30 minutes to find an empty study table at Library West.
· WHY: This library is rather central on campus making it the preferred library for most students. It is usually extremely crowded, so there are only a small number of available tables.
6. There is not a convenient scooter parking location by Heavener Hall (where most of my classes are).
· WHY: There is not room on the corner to make parking as of now. At the time, maybe people thought library west would work for Heavener students, but this parking is always full.
7. Some restaurants refuse to give you straws with your drink, ex: Satchels Pizza.
· WHY: They are trying to become more environmentally friendly by eliminating the use of straws.
8. The target on Archer usually only has at max 4 lanes open which is not enough for the number of customers that visit there, making the lines extremely long.
· WHY: There are not enough employees to work all positions at this target every night of the week, causing lines at check-out to grow rather long.
9. The dumpster that my roommates and I have to take our trash to is about a 5-minute walk from our building, making it an inconvenience to take the trash out and unsafe to do so at night.
· WHY: Since out townhomes look in on each other it would be more of an inconvenience to leave garbage bins outside every door because it would cause a foul smell immediately outside of all residents’ doors.
10. All of the restaurants on campus close extremely early, so there is never a place to get dinner at.
· WHY: Most employees on campus are students and unless there are special exceptions made, students can’t work more than 20 hours a week on campus, forcing these restaurants to close early.
11. None of the Starbucks on campus accept free drinks from the Starbucks App.
· WHY: The Starbucks on campus are not corporate owned stores, so they do not have to follow certain rules.
12. ¾ of my visits to the McDonalds on University their ice-cream machine is broken.
· WHY: The ice-cream machine is one of the most used machines in the restaurant, making it more susceptible to malfunctions.
13. People talking loudly in Library West while I’m trying to study.
· WHY: Some may be unaware of the elevated volume control system in our libraries, or may just be unaware that their talking is loud/ affecting others studying.
14. When I’m walking to class from Library West parking to Heavener and at least 2 people stop and ask me if I’m registered to vote.
· WHY: They need a certain number of people to register or it is their job to get the maximum number of students possible to register to vote.
15. Almost every time I reserve a library study room at library west, there is always someone not signed up who is using it then I have to wait for them to collect their things and leave.
· WHY: This goes back to my previous point about the library. Due to the lack of seats available at Library West, students use study rooms that were not reserved for them.
16. Anytime I have a group project for a course or a club one person always ends up taking all of the responsibility.
· WHY: If students know someone cares enough about their grade to take over the entire project they won’t participate because it will get done with or without them and the easy way out is to not contribute.
17. On any Gator game day, I can’t move my car from the Friday before to the Monday after from street parking because my spot will be taken and I’ll have to park a 25-minute walk away from my house.
· WHY: Nearly 80,000 people come to any given football game at UF and they all need to find places to park their cars, taking up street parking for residents like myself.
18. Healthy food costs significantly more than junk food. Paying for groceries on a college budget makes it almost impossible to eat healthy as much as I would like.
· WHY: Because fruits and vegetables are freshly grown versus junk food like Pringles and cookies, they have higher prices to compensate for transportation and farming costs.
19. Anytime I’ve taken ProctorU exams, it takes about 15-20 minutes on average to connect with a proctor and set the software up correctly. This cuts significantly into my exam time and is stressful especially since the information is fresher in my mind at the beginning.
· WHY: A lot of students use the ProctorU system at once. This creates a longer wait time for students trying to connect to a proctor.
20. My landlord doesn’t allow pets so I had to leave my cat back home in Tampa.
· WHY: Pets can cause damage to the property which would decrease the property value.
Reflection: All of the tips for this project held true. I had no problem coming up with my first 11 bugs. However, when I got to bug 12 I ran out of bugs and began to struggle for ideas about what else bugged me. I took Dr. Pryor’s advice and started the project pretty early so I had a few days to think through my next nine bugs. I found a couple of bugs a day to continue adding to the list. Since I am mostly focused on school, especially with the semester just starting, majority of my bugs pertain to my personal issues that I have on campus and with classes. In addition, as a huge food groupie, a lot of my bugs had to do with things I noticed while on trips to restaurants. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment because it made me think about the smallest things in my daily life that I never really stopped to think about before.

Hello Nicolette,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your bug list because I can relate to most of them. The first one in which you talked about the uneven distribution of the air condoner caught my attention because I have had the same issues in some of my past apartments. One idea that I had for you is to close your roommates air vents a bit. If they have two in their room you could maybe close one of them all the way, or close both up half of the way. This should limit the amount of air going into their rooms, allowing you to be able to turn the air down more and not freeze them out in the process. I hope that makes sense :). I also really can not stand it when people socialize in the library! It really shows a lack of caring about the people around them. I know that I am supposed to give you constructive feedback but I think that you performed the exercise exactly as it was supposed to be done. Good job!
Good morning, Nicolette!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your Bug List very much. I am impressed by the creativity you used to compile your bugs. Though I can definitely relate to some of yours, it’s very interesting to see how different perspectives are affected by different nuances and occurrences. I was touched and became upset for you when you mentioned that you had to leave your cat in Tampa. I can’t imagine being in that situation with my German Shepherd, and it would definitely be on my big list if I were. I also appreciate your first bug regarding the air conditioning not reaching your room, but from a different perspective - at the fire station where I work, the administration office has horrible distribution of air. I have to wear a hoodie every day so our EMS/Training Lieutenant isn’t suffering. Maybe you can grab some warm Gator gear for your roomies as a bargaining chip to lower the thermostat? I am having a difficult time finding ways you could improve this particular post. I thought the ideas were well organized and logically grouped together.
Nicolette,
ReplyDeleteyou did a great job on your bug list. A lot of the bugs in your list I can't relate to yet. I am soon moving to an apartment close to campus so I'm sure that I will be living your bug as part of my day to day life as well. Keep up the good work can't wait to read more of your posts
Hello Nicolette,
ReplyDeleteI found your bug list to be quite relatable. In fact, we shared a bug about cleaning water bottles. I think there should be an easier way to clean them. Another bug that I did not list but could relate to was the bug describing the walk to the dumpster. Its unsafe especially if you must take out the trash at night. Overall, I think your bug list was very well put together.
