Assignment 19-Idea Napkin No. 2

1. Me

a. I am currently an Undergraduate student at the University of Florida on the pre-legal track pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Finance. Outside of the classroom I am involved in a group called the Florida Cicerones, which is directly involved with the alumni association on campus as well as gives tours to prospective UF students. This has increased my confidence as a public speaker, as well as increased my public speaking skills overall. As a finance major, I understand how investing money and putting aside money works, which is a skill that many people lack that will ultimately help with my business. My talents are my ability to connect and have conversations with stranger as well as my creativity. I aspire help the University of Florida become as efficient as it can be. I see this business as being something I could potentially focus my law career around, I would be able to do contracting in regard to finances and ownership of the software myself.

2. What I am offering to consumers?

a. I will be offering an app that has a map of the tables/seats in Library West and will allows students to self-check in at the library turning occupied seats red on the app and leaving available seats green so that students don’t have to waste time walking around the library searching for seats and will know ahead of time where empty seats are.

3. Who I am offering the service to?

I aim to sell this application to undergraduate students at the University of Florida or any UF student who uses Library West to study. It will be sold for $0.99 in the app store and additional profit will be made from local advertisements within the app. Those who use the app the most will be current students “on campus” UF. Ideally the user will live in a close range to campus so that they actually utilize the library. The age group of this consumer is roughly between 18-23 years old (including a few outliers). Because college students don’t have much discretionary income, I chose for it to be inexpensive to download. The one commonality between all of my consumers is they are students on campus who take their time very seriously and want to use it as wisely as they can.

4. Why do they care?

a. My consumers care because as I mentioned, their time is of the utmost importance to them. If an app is able to alleviate their issue, I believe they will take advantage of it. The app is of value to them because it is literally creating more free time in their day by helping them to stop wasting their time. I don’t know about other students here, but personally I’d rather have 20 extra minutes at night to relax than to spend those 20 minutes on the hunt for a seat in Library West.

5. What are my core competencies?

a. There is one thing that sets me apart from a lot of business owners in that I am only 19 years old, so I feel as though students would be able to relate to me more than they would a 50-year-old business owner which gives me a slight advantage on customer loyalty. Other than that, I am not sure there is much that would set me apart from anyone else in terms of the software that I would be creating.

Evaluation

I think that these elements are able to fit nicely together. Being in Gainesville will allow me to connect with users and take advantage of the assistance that I could get from fellow students in regard to my business. There is one aspect I am a bit iffy about which is getting the library to use funds to buy into the software/ how much to charge for the software. I plan to have several back up plans in the case that Library West is uninterested such as selling it for a small price to students and creating an incentive to make them want to buy, or try marketing it to a smaller private university facing the same issues. Other than that, from the interviews I have conducted prior to this assignment it is evident that more than a few students have this need and I believe my app would be a success.

FEEDBACK MEMO:

For my feedback from the previous idea napkin assignment, I didn’t get too much constructive based feedback. Instead, I got a lot of positive feedback which was nice to read but in hindsight it would have made editing my assignment easier with some ways to improve the overall assignment. One point that I took away from my comments were the idea of having a free app would be great for students. However, upon some investigation I realized how long of a process it would be to have the library buy my software and THEN get the app on the market for students. It would be more effective to get the app on the market right away and charging a small fee vs. having students wait for it. I kept the fee low since my peers thought low cost would be the best way to implement the product. Another point I got from the comments was that my post was well organized. I attempted to keep that same organizational structure in this post while changing around a couple of things content wise.

Assignment 18- Create a Customer Avatar

My Customer Avatar

My prototypical customer from the customer segment that I have chosen in an Undergraduate Student at the University of Florida who is majoring in some sort of engineering. My customer takes rigorous courses on campus and spends most of their time at the library or in class. Outside of class they enjoy hanging out with their friends or going out to midtown. They tend to get around by using either a bicycle, scooter, bus or just walking to campus depending on where they live. It is unlikely that my customer would use a car to get to campus because parking is so difficult. Since my typical customer is a millennial you can find them binge watching Netflix or Hulu shows on the weekends. They are either single or in relationships but not typically married or have children because of their mostly young age. Their favorite books are usually ones that they were required to read in high school or the popular series that have been around for a while such as the Hunger Games, since at this point they don’t have much fun to read for fun. They are normally between the ages of 18-23, but often feel a few years older because of the amount of responsibility they have as engineering students.

Below are the avatars that I have created for my prototypical customer:

The things I have in common with my avatar are that we are both undergraduate students studying at the University of Florida. We are also around the same age and use the same type of transportation to get to campus. I believe these are not coincidences because that is the typical profile of an undergraduate student at UF.

Assignment 17- Elevator Pitch 2

1. Attached is the link to my second elevator pitch: https://youtu.be/44rGfkjqlk0

2. I was really surprised by the positive feedback I got last time on my pitch. I’m not sure if it’s actually because my pitch was good or everyone was unfamiliar with them to begin with. I’m assuming it is the latter, since I have never done an elevator pitch before in my life so I am sure there was plenty that I could improve on. I struggled with ending the pitch last time which I got some feedback on. I wasn’t sure how to ask for my group members feedback without it sounding abrupt and awkward, which is exactly what ended up happening in my last pitch. I thought the piece about me improving how I asked for feedback was the most useful comment from my last pitch.

3. I changed the closing of my pitch to ask for feedback in a smoother more transitioned way than before and I think it worked out really nicely. I also changed my pitch around a bit, although that was due to some changes in my business idea and not from feedback.

Assignment 16- What's Your Secret Sauce?

· My unique human capital:

o 1. Creativity- I think outside of the box and am able to adjust to changing environments and preferences of consumers.

o 2. Determination- I do not give up on my ideas or the people I have made promises to easily which I believe will make my business successful.

o 3. Bravery- I am not afraid to stand up for what I believe in or to voice my opinions in a respectful manner when I disagree with someone.

o 4. Empathy- I put others’ emotions into consideration when it comes to choosing my course of action to ensure that everyone is satisfied in some way.

o 5. Personable skills- I am an excellent public speaker and have had a lot of experience working with people so I am able to make them feel important and communicate information to them effectively.

· Interview:

o Watch the attached YouTube video to see my interviews! I will summarize the interviews below in the order that they appear in the video.
https://youtu.be/mRio1b6w8a8
o 1. Interviewee- my dad Jack.

§ Aside from the obvious dad jokes at the end I would have to agree with my dad. I think he was getting along the lines that I am extremely determined which I wrote about myself prior to interviewing him. It is true that I have a strong will power and I will keep working until I achieve my goal, which I hope will help in whatever business I decide to get into.

o 2. Interviewee- my younger brother Julian

§ I really enjoyed hearing what my brother had to say. In a nutshell, he basically said that I never give up. Sometimes I think I take a little longer to bounce back from bumps in the road but it is nice to know that isn’t how everybody else sees me. I also think being able to not give up easily will help me in the future.

o 3. Interviewee- my mom Jean

§ My mom really exposed my true personality with this one. It’s funny because I don’t think of myself as a tough person but I guess that can be how I come off to people. I believe this could be seen as a good or bad thing. I am able to keep my composure and not get walked all over yet I want to make sure I am approachable and kind.

o 4. Interviewee- my best friend Addy

§ Addy had a few good things to say about me such as, I am reliable trust worthy and even confident. I would most definitely agree with the first two. However, I don’t think of myself as the most confident so to know others see me this way really makes me feel better about myself!

o 5. Interviewee- my good friend Andrea

§ I agree with Andrea that I know where to draw the line between acting professional and friendly which is definitely something that makes me stand out from others. I realized this fter Andrea had said it and not before the interview so it was nice to hear something that I agreed with after the fact.

· Reflect on the differences-

o From completing this assignment, I realized I am a little harder on myself than others and don’t see all of the good in myself that they see; which is to be expected. I think the cause of the differences seen between me and them, such as them seeing me as confident, is that others have an outside perspective and notice things that I do that I may not even pick up on. When we judge ourselves we always have a little more bias on what we can do better as compared to what others think. I think these interviews are correct about me, some attributes I had never noticed before but once they were pointed out I definitely understood where they were coming from. Going back to my list from part one I don’t think I would need to make any correction besides maybe adding certain traits such as being confident or knowing when to act professional.

Assignment 15- Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

1. The segment I am focusing on is undergraduate students at the University of Florida who are studying some sort of engineering. The three students I am interviewing are Alexis (civil engineering major), Kaitlin (biomedical engineering major), and Christian (aero-space engineering major)

2. A. “When choosing among an app to purchase does price, quality, or style of the app matter the most?”

a. Alexis: “For me I would choose a free app over an app that costs money just because I feel like I would rather spend my money on other things like food or gas unless I absolutely needed the app. I would have to say I focus most on cost when I’m downloading an app for my phone”

b. Kaitlin: “It depends on the features of the app, like if its high tech and does something I want I don’t really mind paying for it as long as it isn’t a ridiculous amount. I’m really into how software works and stuff in that field so software catches my eye the most.”

c. Christian: “I look at price when I download apps and try to evaluate if the cost is worth what I’m getting, so it just kind of depends. I think I weigh all of those equally really”

3. “How and where do you buy your apps?’

a. Alexis: “I use a paypal account and just get them from the apple app store on my phone, it’s the easiest and most convenient way to do it for me.”

b. Kaitlin: “I’m that weird minority that has an Android so yeah I use the app store on my Android and I just use the credit card that I have hooked up to that to buy apps.”

c. Christian: “I use the app store on my iphone and the card that I have on my account it when I download apps.”

4. “What matters most when you think back on the 'rightness' of the purchase? What helps you determine if the purchase was a good idea? What sorts of things make you think a purchase was a bad idea?”

a. Alexis: “I think what matters to me most when I think back on my purchase, especially for an app is how much I actually use it. If I paid money for something that I never use then I would consider that I bad idea. If it’s something I use all the time and I feel like I would have a hard time without it then that would make the app a good purchase.”

b. Kaitlin: “How much the app assists me and makes my life easier is what matters most when I look back on my purchase. A good purchase, for an app at least, is going to be something that when I do use it is really helpful and puts the question of ‘was this app worth the cost?’ out of my mind. A bad app purchase would be something I paid for that is just poorly set up or difficult to use and navigate.

c. Christian: “After I buy an app what matters most to me is if I can actually use if and understand all of the features of it. It’s a good purchase if I can utilize all of the aspects of it but if I paid just to use it for one out of its 20 features then it just doesn’t seem smart to me.”

5. From my first interview with Alexis I was able to realize that price would be extremely important to some student purchasers, which I had assumed right off the bat since we are college students. I feel like I relate most with her reasoning for buying something or mostly not buying something like an app because I want to save money for more important things. However, I would be attempting to charge only .99 for the app. I also learned from Alexis that she evaluates good/bad purchase decisions based on how much she uses that purchase, which also makes sense. After talking to Kaitlin I realized that some people actually get apps for the software and the tech that goes on behind the scenes….who would’ve thought? If it has new features and things she liked she will buy it. For Kaitlin to determine whether her app purchase was good or bad she evaluates the setup of the app and how useful it is. Lastly, Christian kind of fell somewhere in between these answers. He evaluates price, features, and quality all equally when downloading an app which I believe is probably one of the best ways to do it. To decide whether his app purchase was worth it Christian looks at how many of the features he uses from the app and bases his evaluation off of that.

6. Drawing conclusions-

From these interviews, I would conclude that the segment is pretty split when it comes to post purchase evaluations and alternative evaluations. However, because of this generations love for technology apps are pretty much all bought the same way through the smart phone app store with the cards on file. This helps to make that portion of the purchasing a little bit easier. I feel as though evaluation alternatives and post purchase decisions on apps is all sort of left up to the individuals opinion and what they value in the product. Ideally I would have a useful, high tech app to over at a low price.

Assignment 14- Halfway Reflection

1. Tenaciousness is a competency

There are several behaviors that I have both used and developed in this course to keep up with the requirements. To begin, time management is extremely important in this course. For example, when it came to making the elevator pitch I had to set aside time early in the week to memorize it and set a time to record it. These assignments are not going to be well done if you wait until the last minute to complete them, so definitely manage your time wisely. Being open minded is a behavior that I have had to develop throughout the course which is also extremely important to one’s success in the class. I realized early on that I had to be open to the idea of changing around elements of the business I created and just because something else would work better did not mean my original idea was bad; just simply that there were ways to make it better. I believe being open minded will allow you to create the best business possible. Lastly, I think it is important to take peer reviews seriously. You will want to read what other say about your idea and ways that they think you could improve it. Those comments are the only ways (besides talking to Dr. Pryor) that we can get input on our ideas so give your classmates the respect they deserve!

2. Tenaciousness is also about attitude

The biggest moment in ENT that I have felt like giving up is when it came to the number of interviews that I had to conduct at the beginning. I was just sort of thinking “is this really important?” at the time I was also studying for the LSAT and felt like giving up and just missing a few assignments. But in the end, those interviews helped me tremendously in figuring out the ways to make my business the best that it could be. I feel like I am definitely more tenacious than I used to be just from being in this course for the past two months because of how different the class is set up and how different the assignments are from other courses that I have taken. Having to continually think outside of the box and try to improve my idea from the last assignment both contributed greatly to my newfound tenaciousness.

3. Three tips

1. Try to stay as open minded as possible and know that not everyone Is going to agree with you and that is ok.

2. To develop a tenacious mindset, I would say to just try your best and stay determined. As cliché as it sounds that will help you to persevere through whatever challenges you face during the course.

3. Have fun and use ideas and concepts that you are passionate about, this will help you not only do well but want to do well.

Assignment 13- Reading Reflection No. 1

Reading Reflection:

For my book for this reflection I chose to read Grinding It Outby Ray Kroc, it was such a great read that I even gave to my dad afterwards so he could read it. I learned a lot of valuable information and learned a lot about Reay Kroc that I hadn’t known before. Below I will dive deeper into what I learned from this autobiography.

1. You read about an entrepreneur:

· What surprised you the most?I think what surprised me the most about Ray was the fact that he didn’t get McDonalds up and running until he was in his early 50’s. Prior to this book I had the misconception that entrepreneurs struck it big at a young age. It was interesting to me to see how much prior experience Kroc had before even thinking up the idea of McDonalds franchises. But I now realize how this prior experience plays a crucial role in helping induvial develop the skills needed to create a business.

· What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? What I most admired about Kroc is his ability to say no to anyone. He wasn’t scared to stand up for himself when his boss attempted to cut his pay and when he didn’t see potential in his employees he was not afraid to let others know. I admire his openness and drive towards others; I believe this is what allowed him to persevere throughout his lifetime.

· What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?I didn’t like how little time Ray devoted to his family. Granted, this was one of the reasons he was able to succeed. However, if I were Ethel I don’t think I would be able to deal with having a husband who didn’t make it home some nights until 4 am. I was raised with the notion that family is most important and I felt as though Ray almost neglected his. He did address in the book that he felt bad about this, but I felt he didn’t do TOO much to change it because his business came first.

· Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity or failure? If so, what did they do about it?There were many times throughout the novel where people stood in the way of Ray and his goals. For example, Mac and Dick (the original McDonald brothers) posed some issues when they would send over official paperwork that it was ok for Ray to build a basement in one of his first built franchises. Ray also experienced failure when his ideas of Delacato (a frozen alcoholic drink genre) and “fold-a-nook” did not catch on. Whenever something knocked Ray down of crushed his spirits he would get back up, push through it as best he could and simply try something else; which is something I came to admire most about him.

2. What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited? Ray exhibited many competencies throughout the autobiography. For one, he was skillful in his career as a sales man and had the skills necessary to sell virtually any kind of item to anyone, even customers who had said no multiple times before. Ray was also able to put his work before anything else including sleep. He would work for nearly 22 hours some days when he played the piano at night as a job as well. His desire to succeed trumped his desire to rest which I think was all due to his determination and drive to create a successful business. He was also able to negotiate very well, if something didn’t go exactly Ray’s way he was willing to compromise because he had his end goal in mind at all times.

3. Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you: One part of the reading that confused me was when Ray moved down to Florida to sell swamp land that was basically unable to be built upon to tourists. Ray claims that he thought it was an honest job that he got roped into but now recognized that it was a scam. I was confused how a man with so much common sense even thought for a minute that selling this land to innocent tourists was something ethical and fair to do.

4. If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur what would you ask? Why? My first question to Ray would be: Did you with Walt Disney after your Red Cross World War I days? I found that fact so interesting because what are the odds that Ray and Walt both knew each other? It was just crazy to me and really gave me chills when I read it. Although, it doesn’t have anything to do with his ability as an entrepreneur it is just something I would like to know. My second question would be: How were you able to never give up on your journey after all of the financial and time burdens that you faced? I believe this would be a good question to ask because I think a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs are faced with issues and give up much to quick, so the answer to this would be able to help several people.

5. For Fun: what do you think the entrepreneur’s opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?I believe that Ray thought without hard work and time away from other important obligations in life he would not have been able to create the business that he created. In other words, it is necessary in order to be successful in any type of business. He even said himself that because Harry and June put in 110% like he did he was able to trust them and they pushed him to keep his efforts and work ethic up. I would agree that one cannot be successful without hard work, however it depends how much hard work one is willing to put in. You can’t expect to work 9-5 and create the next McDonald’s but if you’re not willing to give up time with your family then that’s ok.

Assignment 12- Figuring out Buyer Behavior No. 1

1. Choosing a segment

a. My segment is undergraduate students at the University of Florida with engineering majors who study at Library West. I decided to interview engineering students, because I believe they probably are some of the students on campus who spend the most time at the libraries working on their upper level chemistry and calculus type classes. One was a freshman named Emma, one a sophomore named Abigale, and one a junior named Sam. I chose to do different grade levels because I though time at UF could play into some factors regarding the issue.

2. Interviews (See below for question breakdown)

3. Need Awareness:

a. Do you find that there is a specific time of day or even year that finding a seat in Library West presents an issue for you?

i. Emma: “I can’t really say when it comes to time of year since I’ve only been here for a month and a half now, but I do notice that Saturdays it’s never really too hard to find a seat. But if I come on like a Monday night around 6 it’s almost impossible to find a seat and I kind of just walk around aimlessly.”

ii. Abigale: “Last year I noticed the library seems to be absolutely packed during the middle of October, probably because of midterms, and if you want to come the week before finals in December, you might as well just stay home because you will walk around forever looking for a seat. I also think it gets really crowded around noon every day of the week besides the weekends. “

iii. Sam: “I think the most crowded I have ever seen Library West is on Sunday nights just because everyone starts cramming in their last-minute homework and studying for the week. During the year though, I think it’s pretty much empty syllabus week but around the third or fourth week when everyone is starting to stay on campus all day for classes it picks up because no one wants to go home then back to campus for class later. It’s just easier to stop in the library and get some homework done. “

b. What situations do you find this need most prevalent during?

i. Emma: “I feel like I need a seat immediately most often when I’m stressed about work and am thinking about all of the assignments I want to get done. I just want to start in on them right away and not have to walk around looking for a seat thinking about how much I have to do.”

ii. Abigale: “I want a seat right away the most during the months of August- October because walking from wherever I’m coming from to library west gets so hot. I start sweating, my back gets hot from carrying my backpack and I just want to sit down as soon as I can to cool down.”

iii. Sam: “There have been times where I have circled the same floor of the library twice, passed the same kids and have gotten pretty weird looks from them since they just saw me walk by looking for a seat 10 minutes earlier. I would say this is when I think to myself I have an issue and I need a seat right now.”

c. Is there any other place on campus that you feel you have this same need?

i. Emma: “I feel this exact way when I’m trying to find a seat to study in Newell Hall, it’s always so crowded inside of there too.”

ii. Abigale: “I feel this way about pretty much both of the libraries I go to on campus (Marston Science Library and Library West). They both have a similar set up so the problem is definitely there for both places.

iii. Sam: “I definitely experience this issue at Marston too, and even when I’m trying to find an empty classroom in Turlington to study in I never know which ones are in use or not. “

4. Information Search:

a. When you’re walking around Library West and can’t find a seat what is the first thing you do to solve your problem?

i. Emma: “Honestly, if I can’t find a seat I’ll just leave library west and go to a class building or somewhere else on campus to study.”

ii. Abigale: “I’ll usually text some friends and see if they’re in Lib West studying and if they are, ask them If I can sit with them so I can stop walking around looking for a seat.”

iii. Sam: “I usually will sit in one of those sofa like seats and do some laptop work until someone around me gets up and leaves so that I can take their spot.”

b. Is there anything you look for in particular when trying to see how to solve this problem?

i. Emma: “Before I go into the library I feel like the Library West scooter parking is a moderately good indicator of how crowded the library is going to be so that I know what I’m getting myself into ahead of time.”

ii. Abigale: “When I’m walking around I usually look for people packing up or getting their stuff together to leave so I can stop them and ask and if they are leaving take their table.”

iii. Sam: “Before I even leave to go to the library I’ll track my friends on find my friends to see if they’re there and if they are, ask how busy it is.”

5. Report the findings of your research:

a. From my interviews, I learned that all of my customers have different ways of dealing with this problem (although I’m sure some overlap). None of these temporary solutions are ideal so I believe my software would help all students dealing with this issue. I learned that there are certain cues students use to judge the “business-level”, if you will, of the library prior to going in but none of these are exact. For example, just because there are a lot of scooters parked outside doesn’t mean everyone parked there is necessarily going into the library. I also realized how often students rely on their friends for information. Everyone has different observations for when/why the library is crowded at certain times of year, meaning its unpredictable and there is no way for students to know for sure when a good time to go is. Lastly, I found it interesting that not only does library West have this issue, but other buildings on campus as well.

6. Draw Conclusions

a. I think I chose the perfect segment to interview because, besides Emma who hasn’t had much experience at UF, Abigale and Sam knew exactly what their issues were and how to go about them because of the long hours they spend at the library due to their demanding engineering majors. This segment was definitely aware of their need and would be willing to try an app that could save them time and allow them for more work on their school work. Since they tend to speak to a lot of their friends from within their college to ask for help when solving the problem, I believe they would spread the app idea from class mate to class mate, helping it to become a success.

Assignment 11- Idea Napkin No. 1

Idea Napkin No. 1

1. Me

3. Who I am offering the service to?

a. My app is a little trickier than your average product to explain. I will be selling the software itself to the actual university library which will be paid for through the library’s technology funds (which they are granted each school year). However, my use will be undergraduate students “on campus” at the University of Florida. Ideally the user will live in a close range to campus so that they actually utilize the library. The age group of this consumer is roughly between 18-23 years old (including a few outliers). Because college students don’t have much discretionary income, I chose for it to be free for download since the library is paying for the software so that students could actually afford to use it. The one commonality between all of my consumers is they are students on campus who take their time very seriously and want to use it as wisely as they can.

4. Why do they care?

a. My consumers care because as I mentioned, their time is of the utmost importance to them. If a FREE app is able to alleviate their issue, I believe they will take advantage of it.
