My Entrepreneurship Story
I have been exposed to entrepreneurs many times throughout my life. However, in order to illustrate the best picture to everyone about my own entrepreneurship story I feel it’s best to describe my own personal experience as an entrepreneur. My junior year of high school I founded my own club called The Lutz Warriors (Lutz, Florida being my hometown and the warriors being my high school mascot). The purpose of this club was to have National Honors Society (NHS) members from my high school take a trip during club period every other week to the local elementary school, Lutz Elementary, and help the elementary students with their reading and homework skills. I remember one of the struggles getting the club formed was finding the right resources, like the money to fund it from the school’s club fund as well as a teacher to sign off to be the club’s sponsor. In addition, choosing members to join was another difficult task in forming my club. I had over 55 students send in applications! I read through all of them and was able to select around 15-20 students to actually be in the club (with the help of our faculty sponsor). I wanted to create a school club that not only would be fun (as we got to travel off of our high school campus), but also would use NHS students’ abilities to the advantage of others. This club solved the club members problem of needing community service hours while also solving the school’s problem of finding completely free tutors. I chose to visit Lutz Elementary because it was actually the elementary school that I attended, so it made the project that much more special to me. The most rewarding aspect of this experience was being able to make a difference in many children’s lives during the course of the school year. From founding this club, I learned the responsibility and dedication of an entrepreneur, even though at the time I didn’t realize founding and leading the club was considered entrepreneurial.
I enrolled in ENT3003 to learn more about the ideals and processes that go on behind the scenes in becoming an Entrepreneur. My goal one day is own and operate my own law firm, which although is not a NEW idea, is still an entrepreneurial venture. I hoped that in taking this course I could apply some knowledge to my future career and know a little bit about what can be expected when starting out as an entrepreneur. I am really looking forward to coming up with my own business idea in the course and am also excited to see what ideas my classmates have. All in all, I'm really excited for this semester in ENT3003.
Below is a photo of the old Lutz Elementary school house, which stands in front of the newly renovated school (where my club volunteered at every other week).

Hello Nicolette,
ReplyDeleteThis was a nice post to read because It was well written and introduced me to new aspects and ideas of what it means to be an entrepreneur. Creating a high school club is defiantly not where my mind was at when I was that age. I was not as involved as I should have been in high school. That is why I had to go to community college before I could apply to UF… When you talk about opening up your own law firm not being a new idea I was thinking that you certainly could make it one. There are always new ways to make any business venture that has been done before new and exciting just by thinking creatively about it. I think that one of the main points of ENT 3003 is trying to figure out new ways of thinking about old problems that have existed for a long time. You get to make it your own thing, and you can run YOUR business any way you like, but hopefully not get too crazy!
Thanks Rory! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it!
DeleteHi Nicolette,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this post. It was so detailed and have very well organized the story. I admire all of your hard work dedicated to your high school. Everyone who involved in your club seems to be benefited. When I was in high school, I did nothing. I just focus on my academic track. After I came to college, I realized that the company wants people who can work with others and doing something reward back to society. You have done a great start! My father is also a lawyer. It is not that hard to open a law firm. I am positive that you could make it. But, I think the difficult things is how to make your company different from others? Maybe this course could answer you how to solve the problems at the right pain point. You would gain new ways to see problems and be creative for sure. I am also excited for this course too. Hope we all get what we want for this class.
Good morning, Nicolette!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this post. Your story definitely tells of an entrepreneur from a young age! Although not a business per se, the methods you took to start the club were innovative. You also found a way to solve multiple problems with one project, which screams entrepreneurship. And who wouldn't want to get away from campus for a while during high school? Your accomplishment and initial exposure to entrepreneurship is quite admirable.
I thought your blog was very well written.
Hello Nicolette,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your personal experience with entrepreneurship. I think your story represented your perspective on what entrepreneurship is to you. I’ll admit that before taking this class, my definition of entrepreneurship was somewhat narrow-minded. But your post about your experience has helped change my view and broaden my definition. It was nice to read about how you helped your old school while developing and honing your entrepreneurial skills.
Nicolette, this is such an inspiring story. I tried to form a club at my high school and it failed. I am so happy to hear that your story ended on a positive note. I'm sure it'll continue to go on even though you're no longer a student which is even better. I have personally volunteered to tutor elementary students and it is hard work, not to mention important. Thanks for sharing!
